Moving to Memory Care Guide

Downsizing with Dignity:

A Heartfelt Guide for Moving to Memory Care

The process of downsizing a lifetime of memories into a new, more intimate space is one of the most emotional parts of the transition to memory care. It’s more than just sorting through objects; it’s about honoring a legacy. For a person living with dementia, their home is a place of familiarity and security. The key to a successful move is to approach downsizing not as a task of elimination, but as a thoughtful process of curating their most cherished belongings to create a new, safe, and personal haven.

A compassionate mindset can make all the difference. Before you open the first closet, take a moment to set the right intention. Give yourself and your loved one plenty of time by starting weeks, or even months, before the move if possible, as rushing creates stress and can make decision-making feel frantic and upsetting. Throughout the process, preserve their sense of autonomy by including them in simple, choice-based questions like, “Which of these two sweaters is your favorite?”. It also helps to frame the process positively. Instead of asking what can be thrown away, focus on identifying the most important treasures needed to make their new home feel perfect.

Breaking the process into manageable steps can prevent you both from feeling overwhelmed. Begin by obtaining a floor plan of their new room to measure key furniture and ensure a safe, spacious layout. From there, identify the absolute “must-keep” items that define comfort for your loved one, such as a favorite armchair or a collection of family photos. Securing these pieces first provides immense reassurance. When it comes to sorting, a gentle method works best. Use colored stickers to designate items for keeping, gifting to family, donating, or discarding, which can turn sharing heirlooms into a positive experience. It’s often wise to save the most emotionally taxing items, like old photos and letters, for last. Allow time for reminiscing, as sharing these stories is a vital part of the process, not a distraction.

The final step of downsizing happens on moving day itself. To create a sense of comfort, try to arrange the furniture in the new room in a layout similar to their old one. Prepare an “Open First” box containing essentials for the first 24 hours: bedding, toiletries, medications, and a few familiar objects like a favorite lamp or mug. Before unpacking anything else, hang familiar pictures and arrange treasured objects. Walking into a space that already feels personal can immediately reduce anxiety and make it feel like home.

This process is a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient and kind—to your loved one and to yourself. Your thoughtful effort will create a warm, dignified, and seamless transition, laying the foundation for their comfort and happiness in their new community.
